If you’re a tradesperson over 50 and you’re starting to think “there has to be something more than this”… keep reading.
I’m in my 60s. Been a qualified electrician for over 45 years.
And for a long time, I loved it. Genuinely. The problem-solving, the pride in the work, the satisfaction of a job done properly.
But things change, don’t they?
The industry changed. My body changed. And somewhere along the way, I realised — this isn’t sustainable. Not forever.
Maybe you’re nodding along already.
That feeling when you wake up, and your back’s already complaining before you’ve even got out of bed. When you’re knackered by lunchtime. When you look at your pension and think, “That’s it? After all this time?”
When you realise you’re one bad fall away from losing everything you’ve worked for.
Yeah. This one’s for you.
The Stuff Nobody Says Out Loud
The traditional trades career doesn’t work for blokes our age anymore. Simple as that.
Here’s what I see happening:
Your body’s had enough—decades of ladders, heavy materials, all weathers, tight spaces. Now your knees hurt, your back’s shot, your shoulders ache. You’re not bouncing back the way you did at 30 — and you know it.
Your pension’s a disappointment. You’ve been chipping in for years. But when you actually sit down and look at the numbers? They don’t add up. Not even close to what you imagined.
The weather costs you money. Rain? Can’t work. Snow? No jobs. And unlike office workers, you don’t get paid for sitting at home watching it pour down.
You’re still chasing work. Even after 40+ years, you’re still quoting, following up, chasing payment, competing with younger lads who undercut you. You thought it’d get easier. It hasn’t.
There’s no cushion. Holiday? Lost income. Sick? Lost income. Injured? Lost income. If you stop, the money stops. Full stop.
“Just Keep Going” Isn’t a Plan
I’ve watched a lot of tradespeople do this. They keep working into their 60s, not because they want to — because they have to.
Their bodies get worse. The jobs get harder. And eventually, something gives. An injury. Burnout. They can’t do it anymore.
And then what? Retire with not enough saved, a small pension, and nothing else in place.
That’s not the ending any of us want.
What Changed for Me
About ten years ago, I knew I had to do something different.
I wasn’t looking to get rich quick. I wasn’t trying to replace my income overnight. I just wanted to build something that didn’t depend on my body holding up. Something that could grow over time and give me a bit of breathing room.
That’s when I found affiliate marketing.
What Is Affiliate Marketing? (In Plain English)
It’s simple: you recommend products or services, and when someone buys through your link, you earn a commission.
Here’s the thing — you’ve already been doing this your whole career. Recommending a decent tool to a mate. Telling someone about a good training course. Mentioning a cracking van lease deal. That’s affiliate marketing. You just weren’t getting paid for it.
Here’s why it works well for people like us:
No physical demand. You work from a laptop or phone. No lifting, no crawling into lofts, no freezing in the winter months.
Residual income. This is the big one. You do the work once, and you get paid month after month. Even when you’re on holiday. Even when you’re having a bad back week. Even when you’re asleep.
Low startup costs. No van. No tools. No insurance. No premises. Very little to get going.
Flexible. Still doing trade work? Do this in the evenings or on weekends. Nobody’s chasing you for quotes.
Weather-proof. Rain or shine, your income doesn’t care. You can work from home, from a café, from anywhere with WiFi.
You don’t need to be techy. I know that’s what you’re thinking. But honestly — do you use a smartphone? Do you do online banking? Can you send an email? Then you’ve already got what you need. The rest is just learning, which you’ve been doing your whole career.
The Skills You Already Have
Tradespeople are actually really well-suited to this — and most don’t realise it.
You understand people. You’ve spent decades figuring out what clients need and solving their problems. That’s literally what marketing is.
You’re a problem-solver. Something not working online? You’ll figure it out, same as you always have on site.
You build trust. People hire you because they trust you to do the job right. The same principle applies online.
You’re not afraid of hard work. This isn’t a get-rich-quick thing. It takes effort and consistency. But that’s never stopped you before.
My Honest Experience
I’m not going to dress it up.
When I started, I had no idea what I was doing. I made mistakes. I wasted money on the wrong things. It took time.
But finding the right training and the right community changed everything.
I’m part of a friendly community built on integrity and proper support (the kind of values that matter to people like us). They taught me how to pick the right programmes, build an audience, create content, grow an email list, and set up systems that earn recurring income.
First off, I made a few hundred quid. Not life-changing, but it proved it worked.
Not long after, I was covering my costs — website, tools, training.
Keeping at it, I was earning enough to cut back on the physical work. My body genuinely thanked me.
Now, I’ve got multiple income streams earning every month — whether I’ve worked that day or not.
That’s what residual income actually looks like. You build it once, and it keeps paying you. Whether you’re on holiday, in bed with a bad back, or just having a day off.
The Three Things I Hear Most
“I’m too old for this.” No, you’re not. I started in my 50s. I know people who started at 65, even 70. Age isn’t the barrier — mindset is. If you’ve kept up with changing regs and new tech in your trade, you can learn this.
“I’m not a computer person.” Neither was I. I could send emails and use Word. That was genuinely it. Everything else I learned as I went, with the right support around me.
“I don’t have time.” Can you find 2-4 hours a week? A couple of evenings. A Sunday morning. Time in the van on your break. That’s all it takes to get started. You’re not building this overnight — you’re building it gradually, alongside your current work.
What Happens If You Don’t?
I’m not trying to scare anyone. But let’s be honest.
If you don’t build something else, what’s the plan? Work until you’re 70? Hope the pension stretches? What happens when your body finally says no?
The best time to build a safety net is before you need one.
How to Get Started
Step 1 — Learn the basics. Read up on what affiliate marketing actually is. Watch a few videos. You don’t need to know everything, just enough to get a feel for it.
Step 2 — Find proper training and community. Don’t try to figure it out alone. You’ll waste time and money. Find somewhere with step-by-step training, real support, and people who are actually doing it. As I mentioned, I’m part of a friendly community with daily coaching, done-for-you systems, 80% commissions, and a genuinely helpful group.
Step 3 — Start small and stay consistent. A few hours a week. Learn, apply, build momentum. Consistency beats burning yourself out every time.
Step 4 — Give it time. This is a business, not a lottery ticket. But would you rather spend the next year building something that pays you for the next 20 — or look back in five years wishing you’d started?
Why I’m Sharing This
I didn’t write this to sell you something.
I wrote it because I know exactly what it feels like to be a skilled tradesperson in your 50s, watching your body give out and wondering what comes next. The worry about money. The frustration of working harder for less. The exhaustion of doing physically brutal work when everything’s screaming at you to stop.
There is another way. I know because I’m living it.
Affiliate marketing gave me options — income that doesn’t depend on whether I can climb a ladder.
And I want the same for you.
You’ve Got Time. But Not Forever.
If you’re 50, 55, 60 — you’ve probably got 20 or 30 years of life ahead of you. That’s a long time to be worrying about money. It’s also plenty of time to build something solid.
The best time to start was five years ago. Second-best time is today, and it’s easier than ever.
Not when you’re forced to stop. Not when your body gives out. Not when you’re desperate.
Now. While you still have the choice.
